Privacy Policy

Subtitled ("the App") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains what information the App collects, how it is used, and which third-party services process it.
Data Collection
The App does not require account creation and does not ask for your name, email, or other directly identifying information. The App assigns each installation an anonymous device identifier used to measure product usage and manage subscriptions.
The following data is collected:
- Product analytics — anonymous events describing how you interact with the App (e.g. video picked, subtitles generated, paywall shown, export completed), along with device model, OS version, app version, language, and timezone.
- Session recordings — screen interactions within the App (taps, scrolls, navigation) for a sample of sessions, used to improve usability. Text you type (e.g. subtitle edits) is automatically masked and never recorded.
- Crash and error reports — technical diagnostic data about errors and crashes, including stack traces and recent in-app actions ("breadcrumbs"), to fix bugs.
- Subscription status — whether a Subtitled Pro subscription is active, managed via Apple's App Store.
Video Processing & Third-Party AI Transcription
To generate subtitles, the App extracts the audio track from the video
you select and uploads it to our server (api.subtitles-app.com).
Our server forwards the audio to Groq, Inc., a
third-party AI transcription provider, for speech-to-text processing.
The App asks for your explicit permission and names this provider
before this happens the first time you upload a video, and remembers
your choice for subsequent uploads.
What is sent: only the audio track of the video you select. No account information, contacts, photos, or video frames are sent.
Who receives it: our server (api.subtitles-app.com)
and Groq, Inc. (api.groq.com), under contract with us.
Retention: audio files are deleted from our server immediately after transcription. Groq processes audio only for the duration of the request, under contractual terms that prohibit using customer audio to train models and require privacy protections substantially equivalent to those in this policy (see Groq's privacy policy). We do not store or analyze the content of your videos, and the generated subtitles are returned to your device only.
Device Permissions
The App may request the following permissions:
- Photo Library — to select videos from your camera roll and save processed videos.
- Camera — to record new videos directly within the app (optional).
- Microphone — used in conjunction with the camera for recording audio alongside video (optional).
These permissions are only used for the features described above.
Third-Party Services
The App relies on the following third-party services to process the data described above. Each operates under its own privacy policy that provides protections substantially equivalent to those in this policy:
- Groq, Inc. — speech-to-text transcription of audio extracted from the video you select. Operates under contractual terms that prohibit training on customer audio and require privacy protections equivalent to those in this policy. Privacy policy.
- PostHog (EU region) — product analytics and session recordings. Privacy policy.
- Sentry — crash and error reporting. Privacy policy.
- RevenueCat — subscription and purchase management on top of Apple's In-App Purchase system. Privacy policy.
- Apple App Store — processes all payments, renewals, and refunds. Privacy policy.
The App does not display advertising and does not share your data with advertisers or data brokers.
Data Storage and Retention
Video and audio data is not stored on our servers — files are deleted immediately after subtitle generation. Groq receives audio only for the duration of each transcription request and is contractually prohibited from training on customer audio. Product analytics and session recordings are retained by PostHog according to their standard retention policy. Crash reports are retained by Sentry for diagnostic purposes. On your device, the App stores your language preference, AI consent status, subscription status, and session data locally.
Your Choices
Because no account is created, there is no personally identifying information tied to your use of the App. You can request deletion of the anonymous data associated with your device by contacting us at the email address below; include a description of the device and approximate usage window so we can locate the associated records.
Subscriptions & Payments
The App offers optional subscription plans ("Subtitled Pro") that provide access to premium features. All purchases and payments are processed entirely by Apple through the App Store. We do not collect, store, or have access to your payment information (credit card numbers, billing addresses, etc.).

Children's Privacy
The App does not knowingly collect personal information from children under the age of 13. Since the App does not collect any personal data, it is safe for users of all ages.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Any changes will be reflected on this page with an updated revision date. We encourage you to review this page periodically.
